Gainesville History
The unincorporated town of Gainesville is located in Prince William County, Virginia. In 1852 it was used as a stagecoach stop along the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. When the Manassas Gap railway came into the area, the stop was named Gainesville. Grain, lumber and livestock were transported out of Gainesville and it continued to be a prominent shipping area for livestock until the early 1960s. During the time of the American Civil War, soldiers were able to get to the First and Second Battles of Manassas by using a path through the nearby Bull Run Mountains.
