Once home to a missile plant and a large correctional facility, the Lorton real estate market is in the midst of a true revolution. The missile plant closed in the early 70s, while the prison shut its doors permanently in 2001. Since the closure of the prison, residential development has been hot, with new homes, luxury houses, and additional amenities being constructed in the area.
This development has dramatically changed the landscape of Lorton, as well as its desirability among home buyers. No longer tainted with the stigma of the prison, people are seeing Lorton as a safe and family-friendly community with a great location, beautiful scenery, and reasonable real estate prices.
Lorton is not only home to new residential developments, but also to new schools and an arts center. The area is also right by the Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, which houses bald eagles and a variety of local wildlife. Lorton is also great for commuters, as it's conveniently located near I-95. The town is bordered to the north by Alexandria, and to the south by the Occoquan River.
Over 60% of Lorton homes are owner-occupied, which is a strong indication of stability in the community. Buyers will find not only a good selection of single family homes, but also attached houses and condos in Lorton. The median price for all Lorton homes is approximately $435,000.
