Manassas Civil War History

In August of 1861, the first major battle by land of the American Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run was fought nearby at Manassas Junction, an average, yet strategic railroad crossing with routes leading to the areas of Richmond, Washington and the Shenandoah Valley. Following the war, Manassas was incorporated in 1873. Later in 1892, it replaced Brentsville as Prince William County's seat. Ultimately in 1975, it became an independent city. As of the 2000 census, the Manassas population was 35,135.

Historical exhibits, both permanent and temporary, depict Northern Virginia Piedmont's history with artifacts, historical documents and photographs. There are also two video exhibits that describe the region's settlement and the Civil War's impact on the community.
